The Acropolis of Athens in Greece, lit up at night

Night

Can You Visit the Acropolis of Athens at Night?

The Acropolis site itself (the archaeological complex) is generally closed after sunset, with standard opening hours ending around 5:00–8:00 PM, depending on the season.

Currently the Acropolis of Athens does not offer late evening or night tours. Therefore, you can’t generally roam the temples or climb the marble paths at the Acropolis after dark.

However, night tours of the Acropolis Museum may be offered during your visit, and the museum terrace offers fabulous views of the lit-up Acropolis.

And there are many other surrounding viewing areas from where you can enjoy views of the illuminated Acropolis buildings. The complex is especially magical on full moon nights!

Is the Acropolis Illuminated?

Yes—the Acropolis is beautifully lit up every night, 365 days a year, rain or shine.

Lighting Schedule
The Acropolis lights turn on right after sunset and usually stay on throughout the night. Blue hour and dawn are wonderful times for capturing photos or video of the illuminated archaeological complex.

Lighting Type
In 2020, a stunning new LED lighting system was installed to highlight not only the Parthenon but also many of the other monuments, such as the Erechtheion, the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Acropolis rock itself—each monument individually spotlighted for dramatic contrast. In all, 14 landmarks at the complex are illuminated.

The new lighting system was designed to emphasize every column, frieze, and façade with warm, golden tones—making the Acropolis visible from nearly every corner of central Athens.
